What is consecutive interpretation?

Unlike simultaneous interpretation, which is used in large gatherings such as international conferences and that usually requires special equipment, consecutive interpretation is represented in smaller gatherings such as business meetings, negotiations, legal process or press conferences, and the equipment does not require more of pens and notebooks. Compared with simultaneous translations advantages are precisely the lack of special equipment and simpler preparation, while the disadvantage is the fact that consecutive interpretation does not take place simultaneously with the original speech but is delayed for at least one syntactic unit, for part of the sentence or clause, and often the delay is five or even ten minutes.

In consecutive interpretation an interpreter speaks only when the native speaker of the source language has finished the presentation of message. While native speaker communicates what he wants, consecutive interpreter listens, remembers and usually notes parts of speech. The interpreter can only rely on the memory or can write, and this depends on the agreement with the client. This decision relates to the complexity of the subject, the dynamic of the presentation and the nature of the meeting. All these elements are reflected on the length of the segments that the interpreter is translating.

If with the client it is defined to translate the smaller segments, an interpreter can base on memory. In this case the native speaker stops after each segment that is not too long to remember, for example a sentence or even a clause and the interpreter translates. Although there is a tendency to translate short segments, there are some advantages in increasing the length of the same. In fact, when listening to the native speaker longer, the interpreter gets a better idea of what this person wants to transmit and therefore produces a translation of superior quality. On the other hand, for participants who do not speak the language of departure but the target language, it makes no sense to sit half an hour listening to someone they do not understand, awaiting the translation.

Therefore it is important to find the right balance between the integrity of the information to be transferred and the time required for interpretation.
